Consumer unit work is about more than replacing a box on the wall. The existing installation, circuit condition, available protection and the practical requirements of the property all need to be considered.

What I can help with

  • Consumer unit replacements.
  • Upgrades to older installations.
  • Assessment of existing circuit arrangements.
  • Remedial work identified during inspection or testing.
  • Advice on suitable options for the property and existing installation.

Before carrying out an upgrade, I consider the wider condition of the installation rather than assuming the consumer unit is the only issue. Where further work is advisable, I will explain why.

The right upgrade depends on the installation around it.
I will explain the findings and the available options so you can make an informed decision.

Common questions

Does an old consumer unit always need replaced?

Not necessarily. The condition and arrangement of the whole installation should be considered before deciding what work is appropriate. That being said, if you have an older unit with ceramic fuses or no RCD protection, it may be time for an upgrade!

Can you upgrade the consumer unit without rewiring the house?

Absolutely, these are two separate issues. Whether an upgrade is appropriate depends on the condition of the existing circuits and any remedial work that may be needed.

Will you inspect the existing installation first?

Always. Understanding what is already there is an important part of deciding what the consumer unit work should involve.

Can you carry out remedial work after a test?

Yes. Where testing identifies issues that need addressed, I can explain the findings and discuss the practical remedial options.
